Tipping Point: Ecofiction for Tomorrow’s World

A man sealed inside a fallout bunker questions whether survival is the same as living. A married couple, separated by unbearable heat, dreams of reuniting as temperatures continue to rise. A salesman plots to profit off the denizens of a drowned world. Unrelenting storms interrupt weddings and daily routines. Food supplies dwindle. Humans, animals, and plants are displaced. Loved ones are left behind. Cycles repeat. Yet, hope persists. Mechanical marvels, intrepid explorers, and small acts of defiance make a difference in our changing world. Cycles can be broken.

Tipping Point: Ecofiction for Tomorrow’s World brings together twelve authors affiliated with Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and the greater Tennessee area to imagine how climate change will shape the future of our world. These speculative fiction stories explore the personal, political, and planetary stakes of a changing climate. Whether unsettling and haunting or profoundly humorous, these stories are deeply human. Tipping Point invites readers to consider not only the worlds we may lose, but also the futures we can still create.

About the Editor

Max Dosser is a Senior Lecturer of Communication Studies at Vanderbilt University. Before that, he was a Graduate Teaching Fellow and Andrew W. Mellon Predoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric and Ph.D. certificates in Film and Media Studies and in Cultural Studies. When he isn’t researching speculative fiction, fandoms, music communication, or animated media, he’s writing about heroic blueberries, raven knights, and long voyages in outer space. He is the co-founder and co-editor of Flash Point Science Fiction.
